2019 Season Report

20 December 2019

The Polar Portal season report for 2019 is ready for download.

The Arctic season 2018-2019 was generally drier and warmer than the average. Summer 2019 was dominated by periods with a negative NAO index, and there were several melting events, in particular at the end of July and the beginning of August. This means that the Ice Sheet ended the season in a weaker state. The area of outlet glaciers has slightly decreased compared to the average 1986-2018. There was little sea ice already in the beginning og the season, and in July the extent was record-low compared to 1986-2010. The sea ice minimum in September was the second lowest. A record low albedo in the Ice Sheet was observed in 2019.
